Access program

Free VPN for journalists, activists, and digital-rights NGOs

How it works

Email support@ghostshield.ai with the subject “ACCESS PROGRAM”, one line about your work, and a verifiable reference (byline, staff page, or your organization’s site). A person reviews it within 48 hours. Approved applicants get a free 12-month subscription — full features, 10 devices, no card, renewable.

Why this program exists

The people who most need an encrypted, no-logs connection — reporters protecting sources, activists on monitored networks, NGO staff working under surveillance-heavy regimes — are often the people least able to pay for one. GhostShield runs RAM-only servers with a strict no-logs policy and engineers specifically for restrictive networks (see the methodology and the per-country guides). Charging the press-freedom community for that would be backwards, so we don't.

Who qualifies

  • Journalists — staff or freelance, any country, any beat. A byline or staff page is enough.
  • Human-rights defenders and activists — including in countries where naming your affiliation is dangerous; alternative verification can be arranged.
  • Digital-rights, press-freedom, and humanitarian NGOs — individual staff licenses, or a small batch for a team.
  • Journalism students — case by case with a school email.

What you get

The full product, not a limited tier: AI threat detection, ChaCha20-Poly1305 encryption over WireGuard, kill switch, DNS-leak protection, 10 simultaneous devices, all server locations. Free for 12 months, renewable with a quick re-verification. No payment details collected at any point.

Common questions

Who qualifies for a free GhostShield subscription?

Working journalists (staff or freelance with published work), human-rights defenders, and staff of digital-rights or press-freedom NGOs. Students of journalism with a school email are considered case by case. We verify manually — a byline, staff page, organization website, or accreditation is usually enough.

What exactly do you get?

A free 12-month GhostShield subscription with the full feature set — AI threat detection, ChaCha20-Poly1305 over WireGuard, strict no-logs on RAM-only servers, kill switch, and 10 devices. No card, no payment details, ever. Renewable with a quick re-verification before expiry.

How do you protect applicants in high-risk environments?

Apply from any email account — we do not require a work address if naming your outlet could expose you; alternative verification can be arranged. We keep no activity logs (RAM-only servers wipe on reboot), and the application email thread is the only record of the grant. Delete it on your side and no usable trace of your VPN use exists with anyone.

How long does approval take?

Within 48 hours for most applications, faster when a deadline or active risk is stated in the subject line. Approvals are manual and made by a person, not a form — we cap monthly grants to keep the review honest, so if a month is full we tell you when your slot opens.

What is the catch?

There is none and nothing to cancel — the grant simply expires after 12 months unless you renew. We do this because a VPN company that says it exists for privacy should be usable by the people who need privacy most and can afford it least. If you find GhostShield useful and ever mention or link this program so colleagues can find it, we appreciate it — but it is not a condition.

For organizations and resource pages

If you maintain a digital-security resource list for reporters or at-risk communities, you are welcome to link this page directly — it is the canonical description of the program and we keep it current. Bulk grants for newsrooms or NGO teams: same email, subject “ACCESS PROGRAM — TEAM”.
