Stan is strict about being Australian. Its help centre says Stan is "only licensed to operate within Australia, and this means there are geo-blocking restrictions in place to prevent any overseas access". Try from another country and you get an error code instead of a show: L8 when signing in, A26, L1 or C11 when streaming, DL9 when downloading (Stan's error codes).

VPNs get the same answer. Stan's pages say "You will not be able to access Stan if you have a VPN or custom DNS service enabled", and C11 is the code for that case, which can appear for people inside Australia too (Stan, error C11). That is the difference from Netflix or Prime Video, where a VPN picks between libraries: outside Australia there is no Stan library to pick.

GhostShield has one Australian location, Sydney. There is no test log showing Stan accepting it, and Stan says it blocks VPNs, so this page does not promise that it works. The route Stan supports for travel is downloads: most of the catalogue can be downloaded on an iPhone or iPad (iOS 15 or later) or an Android phone or tablet (Android 5.0 or later) and watched offline anywhere (Stan, downloads). Why Stan Shows Different Content

It does not show different content abroad; it shows none. Stan's library is licensed for Australia only, so there is no British or American Stan to switch to, and every country outside Australia gets the same error.

Stan's help pages name two things that trigger those errors: being outside Australia, and having a VPN or custom DNS service switched on. They do not say how Stan recognises either. Some titles also limit how many times an account can download them each year, for licensing reasons, which shows up as error DL7 (Stan, error DL7).

Is Using a VPN with Stan Legal?

Stan's limit comes from its licence: its help pages say it is licensed to operate only within Australia and that it blocks VPN and custom DNS connections. Its terms add that you may stream in Australia only, that Stan uses technology to verify your location, and that it may suspend, restrict or cancel an account used in a way inconsistent with that rule (Stan terms, clauses 7.10 and 9.13). What Makes a Good Streaming VPN?

Downloads sidestep the question: they play from the device, so hotel Wi-Fi does not matter. Stan lets you set download quality in App Settings, and higher quality takes more storage. Inside Australia, Stan wants no VPN at all.

Watch Stan on Any Device

iPhone / iPad

Update to iOS 15 or later and open Stan while you are still in Australia, with any VPN off.
Tap Download in a title's synopsis, or next to each episode of a series. Set the download quality in App Settings first if storage is tight.
Overseas, open Downloads and press Play. Downloads cannot be cast or AirPlayed to a TV; trying it makes Stan stream from the internet instead.

Android phone or tablet

Android 5.0 or later. In Stan, tap the Downloads icon, then Find Something to Download.
If the Stan app is missing from Google Play, set the Play Store country to Australia and remove overseas payment methods; Stan says the change can take up to 48 hours.
Overseas, watch from the Downloads tab without a connection.

Laptop, desktop or TV

Stan offers no downloads on laptops or desktops, so they only stream inside Australia.
Streaming on a TV meets the same overseas block.
At home in Australia, switch GhostShield and any custom DNS off before opening Stan, as Stan's help pages ask.

Troubleshooting

Fix Common Stan Errors

Error L8, A26, L1 or C11

Stan shows these when you are outside Australia or a VPN or custom DNS is on. Inside Australia, turn off GhostShield and any custom DNS, restart the device and the router, and try again. Outside Australia, streaming will not work; watch your downloads.

Error DL9 while downloading

The same overseas and VPN check applies to downloads. Download in Australia with any VPN or custom DNS turned off.

A download says it has expired

You have 30 days to start watching a download and 48 hours to finish it once you press play (Stan). Downloading again needs a connection Stan accepts, which overseas it will not, so download close to your departure date.

Error DL7

Some titles can be downloaded only a limited number of times per account each year. Stream it at home instead, or wait for the allowance to reset.

The Stan app is missing from Google Play

Stan says to set the Play Store country to Australia and remove overseas payment methods, then allow up to 48 hours for the change.
