How to Unblock Reddit

Reddit is blocked in fewer countries than the big social networks, but where it is blocked it is thoroughly done, and it is one of the most commonly filtered sites on school and office networks because an entire forum of forums is impossible for a filter to sort through. China blocks it outright. Indonesia has kept it blocked for years over adult communities. Turkey has blocked it in the past. Many universities leave it alone while most secondary schools do not.

There is a second, quieter kind of block: Reddit itself. The site turns away traffic from addresses it associates with bots and scrapers, and it shows a bare page saying you have been blocked by network security. Datacenter addresses, which include many VPN servers, get this more often than home connections, and it is the main thing to understand before using a VPN with Reddit.

A VPN gets you past a network or national block by carrying your traffic to a country where reddit.com is reachable. Logging in to your account makes Reddit far more lenient than browsing anonymously.

China blocks Reddit as it does every foreign platform that it cannot moderate. Institutions block it because Reddit contains everything. A filter cannot allow the study groups and block the rest, so most school products put the whole domain under a category like forums or social media and block it for student accounts. Offices block it as a time sink.

Reddit's own block is different in kind: it is the site deciding that the address you come from behaves like a scraper. It is triggered by the address, not by anything you did, and it is why a VPN server that works for every other site can still get a blocked page on Reddit.

Understanding Internet Censorship

Internet censorship takes many forms, from state-level firewalls to corporate network restrictions. Organizations like Access Now's #KeepItOn coalition track internet shutdowns globally, while the Open Observatory of Network Interference (OONI) provides open data on censorship around the world.

Changing DNS defeats only the simplest filters; national blocks and modern school filters match the connection itself.

Is unblocking Reddit legal?

Using Reddit through a VPN is not an offence anywhere that blocks the site; the orders apply to the networks. China regulates the VPN itself, allowing only approved services. On a school or company network, bypassing the filter may break its acceptable use policy. Reddit's terms permit VPN use; its bot filter is about traffic patterns, not a rule you can break.
